A school board in southern California postponed a vote to open a Planned Parenthood location at a high school in Los Angeles after parents objected. The board of Norwalk-LaMirada Unified School District had originally planned to take a vote on this outrageous proposal on Monday, July 18, but decided not to after hundreds of protesters showed up outside the high school.
This shows that when parents speak out and condemn egregious ideas, they can make a difference.
If the board votes in favor of the new facility, staff will be able to write prescriptions and offer drugs or long-term contraceptives like IUDs. For now, they claim that the clinic would not perform abortions or transgender cross-sex hormone therapy. Instead, staff would refer students to other Planned Parenthood locations “for additional medical or other health care services where indicated.”
The proposal states that the clinic “will encourage students to involve their families in decision making.” However, it will still be able to provide services to minors without parental consent or notification because of California’s liberal consent laws.
Taxpayers and parents should be deeply concerned by this proposal.
“The fact that the contract specifically notes that ‘under California law minors have the right to consent to reproductive health services without parental consent or notification’ is appalling in and of itself – as is the list of services that will be offered to children, from STD treatment to IUDs to ‘referrals to other health centers operated by Provider for services not offered at the Schools,’” said Nicole Neily, president and founder of Parents Defending Education.
Other Planned Parenthood locations do offer abortions and gender-affirming hormone therapy, meaning there is a real possibility that students could undergo harmful, life-changing procedures without their parents’ consent.
“To add insult to injury,” Neily continued, “there is no way for parents to EVER obtain this information, as the contract asserts that all medical records are to be maintained by Planned Parenthood (‘neither District staff nor a Student’s parents or guardians may access the Student’s medical records maintained by Provider without the written approval of the Student.’)”
Parents, not schools, must be the primary decision makers when it comes to children’s health and safety. Children are safest when their parents are in control of their medical care, especially when it comes to experimental procedures that cause permanent damage like gender “transition” surgeries or cross-sex hormones.
Any board member who is complicit in introducing or approving this proposal should be recalled as soon as possible. It’s clear that they are untrustworthy and willing to sacrifice the safety of children to advance a woke agenda.
In order to keep this proposal – and any others like it, – from ever coming to fruition, parents and taxpayers need to continue to push back and vote these unfit board members out.
