West Coast States Double Down on Abortion

Immediately following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the governors of Oregon, Washington, and California released a joint statement announcing a multi-state pact to protect abortion on the West Coast.

The Multi-State Commitment” signed by Governors Gavin Newsom of California, Kate Brown of Oregon, and Jay Inslee of Washington declares that “all people seeking abortion and other reproductive health care services” will find “a safe haven” in their states.

The statement reads, “This multi-state commitment affirms the governors’ commitment in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s unprecedented decision to strip away a constitutional right that has been in place for half a century, leaving abortion regulation to the states.”

Newsom and his Democratic colleagues continue to rely on the argument that abortion is a “right,” but this is false. The natural right to life is not granted by the government and no one has the “right” to end an innocent life. Further, rights are not determined by public opinion, and so-called abortion “rights” are certainly nowhere in our founding documents. From a constitutionalist perspective, Roe was an egregious decision to begin with, as it invented the “right” to abortion with no legal precedence. Thankfully, the Supreme Court agrees.

The multi-state pact’s statement went on to highlight the pro-abortion actions these governors have taken, including Governor Newsom’s $125 million package to expand abortion access in California.

Newsom and the state legislature have also removed co-pays for abortions and recently signed a legislative package to further expand abortion.

Further, California lawmakers are working to pass over a dozen pro-abortion bills, including Assembly Bill 2223, which removes penalties for anyone doing abortions through all nine months of pregnancy and makes infanticide much harder to investigate and prosecute.

Governor Newsom, along with Governors Inslee and Brown, are imposing a dangerous and immoral agenda on their states.

While the pro-life movement has achieved a major victory with the death of Roe, it is clear that pro-lifers’ work is far from over.

This means that pro-life activism is arguably more important than ever. While state leaders double down on abortion, Christians in California must make their voices heard, stand firm against these abhorrent proposals, and strengthen their efforts to foster a culture of life.

Pro-lifers can foster a culture of life and even transform hearts and minds by practicing radical love and compassion toward expecting mothers who are in difficult situations. Churches and their members should offer help and hope to abortion-vulnerable women and men by donating to crisis pregnancy centers, giving directly to mothers in need, or simply walking with those that are hurting.

Life is winning, but unfortunately elected officials are standing in the way with ungodly proposals and lies. Pro-lifers must stand firm in the truth, be equipped with the facts, reject the left’s lies, and urge pro-life representatives to take action.
