SACRAMENTO, CA – By a vote of 58-16, the California Assembly passed Senate Constitutional Amendment (SCA) 10 on Monday. The legislation to expand abortion through all nine months of pregnancy will now go on the November 8 ballot for all California citizens to vote.
In lengthy floor speeches, multiple Democrats rose to justify why they believed California should deny unborn children equal protection of the law, but legislators refused to answer a pointed question from Assemblyman Kevin Kiley about late-term abortions.
Kiley specifically asked Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, who presented SCA 10 on the floor, if the law would remove California’s existing general prohibition on “post-viability” abortions. There was a long pause after the question was asked and then Rendon finally said he would answer the question in his closing remarks. But after numerous legislative speeches, Rendon had Asm. Sabrina Cervantes give the closing remarks instead. She didn’t answer Kiley’s question as promised.
“SCA 10 is extreme, even for a state like California,” said Jonathan Keller, President of the California Family Council. “Many people who identify as pro-choice still reject the idea of abortions ending the lives of viable children late in pregnancy.”
California Family Council plans to work with local, state, and national allies to expose the barbaric nature of this legislation.
