California Family Council Issues Dire Warning Over Passage of Proposition 3

California Family Council (CFC) reiterated its grave concerns following the recent approval of Proposition 3 by California voters, which added to the California State Constitution with an alarmingly vague definition of marriage. Passage of this measure opens the door to legal challenges to laws against polygamy, child marriage, and incestuous relationships. By placing Prop 3 on the ballot, politicians undermined the most foundational unit of society — the family. CFC has long argued that marriage between one man and one woman is essential for the stability of family life and, ultimately, for the well-being of children.

Jonathan Keller, President of California Family Council, expressed his deep disappointment in a statement:

“Marriage is vital for the well-being of children and society, which is why Proposition 3’s failure to offer any clear definition is so dangerous. By abolishing the historic definition of marriage in California’s constitution, Prop 3 paves the way for the legal recognition of polygamy, child marriage, and incestuous relationships. This is a grave threat to families across California.”

CFC’s opposition to Proposition 3 is rooted in the conviction that the historic definition of marriage strengthens family life and ensures a secure environment for raising the next generation. Whenever possible, children deserve to be raised by their own biological mother and father. Redefining marriage, or refusing to define it at all, undermines the social and legal frameworks that protect children and uphold the family.

In support of this position, California Family Council has provided three authoritative legal letters that outline the potential consequences and legal ramifications of Proposition 3. These documents are available here:

These expert opinions substantiate the reasoning behind CFC’s position and underscore the potential harms this measure poses to California’s children and families.
