CFC Co-Hosts Prayer Vigil While CA Legislators Honor “Drag Nun” at Capitol

California Family Council (CFC) will join The American Council (TAC) and the California Catholic Conference (CCC) to host a Christian Prayer Vigil today on the west steps of the California State Capitol at 2 p.m. The peaceful event is in response to ceremonies on the Senate and Assembly floors honoring a controversial and offensive group of men who dress in drag as nuns.

Leaders of the Evangelical and Catholic communities will join the three organizations to unite in prayer and raise their voices in hymns of the faith. The vigil is not a political protest but a time of solemn prayer and worship.

A statement from CFC President Jonathan Keller reads: “It’s disheartening to see the California Legislature honor a group characterized by its mockery of Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. By promoting the profane ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,’ these elected leaders are endorsing mockery, hatred, and blasphemy. This ceremony is deeply offensive towards millions of Californians across the Golden State.”

The “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” (SPI) have recently sparked national controversy after the Dodgers announced their intent to honor the group during their annual “Pride Night” festivities. The baseball team initially withdrew the invitation after protests from religious and political leaders. But the Dodgers reversed course and re-invited the SPI after pro-LGBTQ legislators and activists strongly objected.

Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) ignited more controversy when he invited “Sister Roma” from SPI to be honored on the Senate floor as part of the legislature’s Pride Month event today Monday, June 5, at 2 PM. All eight Republicans in the chamber issued a public letter asking the Senate leader to withdraw Sister Roma’s invitation. “The California Senate … should not be associated with disrespect or hatred towards those with differing religious ideologies,” the letter stated. But Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins denied their request

The Prayer Vigil will be broadcast live Monday, June 5, at 2 p.m. on the CFC Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CaliforniaFamily/
