A committee in the California legislature passed SB 107 last month, a bill that would establish the state as a “safe haven” for minors seeking transgender procedures, including sterilizing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and mastectomies.
The bill, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), allows insurance companies, physicians, and contractors to disregard subpoenas pertaining to child custody and other court measures from other states if the child is being medically treated for gender dysphoria. It also bans health care providers from providing medical information requested from another state if that state has a policy allowing civil action to be taken against individuals who perform “gender-affirming health care” on children.
The bill grants California courts a “temporary emergency jurisdiction” for multiple reasons, including abuse, abandonment, and protection of a child, or if a “child has been unable to obtain gender-affirming health care or gender-affirming mental health care.”
“A law of another state that authorizes a state agency to remove a child from their parent or guardian based on the parent or guardian allowing their child to receive gender-affirming health care is against the public policy of this state and shall not be enforced or applied in a case pending in a court in this state,” the bill reads.
The Assembly Public Safety Committee passed SB 107 on June 28th even after hearing from a teen who had undergone transgender procedures and regretted them, and parents who were concerned about this type of law in the state.
Chloe Cole, a 17-year-old girl who had gone through treatment to become a male, but is now a detransitioner, testified against the bill at the hearing, saying, “At age 15, I asked to remove my breasts … I attended a top surgery class that was filled with around twelve girls that thought they were men, most were my age or younger. None of us were going to be men. We were fleeing from the uncomfortable feeling of becoming women.”
“I was unknowingly, physically cutting off my true self from my body, irreversibly and painfully,” Cole continued. “… I really didn’t understand all the ramifications of any of the medical decisions I was making.”
Children who are still developing mentally and physically cannot make permanent, life-altering decisions. Further, transgender surgeries mutilate healthy bodies, promote dangerous lies, and cause irreversible damage, such as infertility. Countless detransitioners are speaking out about their stories and condemning the injustice that was done to them, yet they are ignored by the left.
Unless parents and community leaders speak up and protest, the bill is expected to pass because of the Democrat supermajority in both houses of the state legislature.
Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats are pushing transgender ideology at the federal level with a “Transgender Bill of Rights.” Ultimately, the bill would erase women’s sports, redefine the word “woman,” and pose serious threats to religious liberty and freedom of conscience for medical professionals.
Studies show minor children are not sufficiently mature to make informed decisions about their own sterilization. Further, 61-98% of children with gender dysphoria eventually outgrow the confusion and end up reidentifying with their biological sex.
What children who are suffering from gender dysphoria need is not affirmation of the lies they believe about themselves, but the truth. The presence of distress and confusion is not a sign that they were born the wrong gender – it is a sign that true, professional medical help is needed to address the root causes of the distress. God gave each of us our body and our sex with a specific purpose, and He does not make mistakes.
SB 107 is now the in Assembly Appropriations Committee with a hearing scheduled for August 3.
