Progressives are trying desperately to safeguard abortion in preparation for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. They’ve introduced nearly a dozen harmful bills this legislative session to expand abortion access, but one is particularly alarming.
Sen. Toni Atkins introduced Senate Bill 1375, which would allow nurse practitioners to perform solo abortions without a doctor. It builds on previous legislation that allows nurses to independently treat patients and aims to increase the number of healthcare workers who can perform abortions.
This bill prioritizes abortion access over the safety of women. “It’s a dangerous bill,” said executive director of the California Catholic Conference Kathleen Domingo. “I think what this is really doing is undermining the safety of women in all of their healthcare interactions.”
Atkins claims that the bill would expand early abortion access and make abortion more affordable. This means more innocent children would be stripped of their right to life and more mothers would be offered a harmful and traumatic procedure rather than the support they need.
Tragically, Governor Gavin Newsom is leading the movement to expand abortion in California, vowing to safeguard abortion ahead of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that could overturn Roe v. Wade.
Last December, he asked Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and other abortion-rights proponents to create a plan for the state to become an abortion sanctuary. The California Future of Abortion Council suggested 45 policy changes to increase abortion access and help Newsom achieve his goal.
The recommendations included the exact measure that SB 1375 proposes, which is to allow more health care workers to perform abortions by lessening the requirements for them to do so.
The report also estimated that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the number of women traveling to California seeking abortions would increase from 46,000 to 1.4 million. SB 1375 is one way that Democrats are preparing for this influx.
Progressives’ radical plan to transform California into a destination spot for abortion seekers also includes ten other bills that were introduced this session. The bills propose abortion-training scholarships for medical students, lowering abortion costs, making insurance companies cover abortions, and more.
Mothers and their children deserve better than abortion, much less abortion with compromised safety standards. Women need life-affirming policies that will aid them in raising their children, which will ultimately bring them joy and fulfillment. Policies that enable and encourage women to get abortions only cause life-long grief and regret.
Every abortion wounds a mother and ends an innocent life. As Christians, we have a duty to do everything in our power to stop all abortions.
This means we must firmly oppose SB 1375, a radical bill that would compromise women’s safety and lead to many more abortions in California.
Please contact our lawmakers and urge them to oppose SB 1375.
