Several bills hostile to biblical values sit on California Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk awaiting his signature or veto. Here is an updated list of bills the California Family Council and its allies at the capitol are concerned about.
SB 24: College Chemical Abortion Pill Bill
This bill mandates California public university health centers offer students chemical abortions as a “basic health service.” Chemical abortions are used to kill an unborn child up to 10 weeks old. Non-surgical chemical abortion involves two drugs: Mifepristone/RU-486, which ends the life of the unborn child, and Misoprostol which causes severe cramping, contractions, and bleeding to expel the baby from the womb. Former Governor Jerry Brown vetoed an almost identical bill last year, saying it was not necessary. But Newsom said on the campaign trail he disagreed with Brown’s decision.

AB 624: Abortion Hotline for Student Identification Cards
This bill gives abortion clinics, like Planned Parenthood, the opportunity for free advertising on the back of all public school student ID cards. Specifically, AB 624 requires two hotlines to be printed on the back of all student IDs in public junior high schools, high schools, and colleges/universities: A sexual or reproductive health (abortion provider) hotline and the National Sexual Assault Hotline. The bill also requires the National Sexual Assault Hotline to be printed on all ID cards for students in 7-12 grade private schools and private colleges/universities.

AB 175: Foster Care Kids Rights to Include: Secret Abortions & Rape Care, Confidential Phone Calls & Texts, and Preferred Pronouns
This bill gives the following rights to California’s foster care children. The right to demand their foster parents use their preferred name and gender pronoun. The right to receive adequate clothing, grooming, and hygiene products, that reflex a child’s sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression. The right to attend school clubs, parades, and other activities consistent with the child’s age, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression.
The bill also guarantees foster kids, at any age, the right to secret abortions, contraception, and medical treatment for rape “without the knowledge or consent of any adult.” And finally, AB 175 gives foster kids the right to confidential communication, which includes the right “to make, send, and receive confidential telephone calls and other electronic communications, and to send and receive unopened mail unless prohibited by court order.”

AB 493: LGBTQ Affirmation Training for Teachers
This bill encourages every California school district to give LGBT affirmation training every two years to all junior high and high school teachers. The training and resources created by the California Department of Education will be made available to school districts by 2021. The training will include instructing teachers on how to provide LGBTQ identified students with supportive counseling, peer clubs, referrals to LGBTQ activist organizations, and an overview of policies related to harassment, bullying, and bathrooms and locker room rights. The California Family Council believes this bill will be used by activists to pressure school districts into mandating training that would force Christian teachers to promote and affirm values about gender and sexual orientation that conflict with their biblical beliefs.
