Christians Brace Themselves as Gavin Newsom Gets Sworn in as California’s New Governor

California Christians are bracing themselves for what is to come as former San Francisco mayor and same-sex marriage lightning-rod Gavin Newsom was sworn into office this morning. At the invitation-only event in a tent on the west step of the state capitol, Gavin reaffirmed his belief in abortion rights and reminded the crowd of his moral courage for marrying two women 15 years ago, in defiance of the law and California voters.

“Based on his past actions and legislative promises, it is sadly clear that Governor Newsom is openly hostile to a biblical view of life, family, and liberty,” said California Family Council President Jonathan Keller.

Before giving his speech, Newsom introduced his young family, including his four children all under the age of 10, and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker, and actress who wants to be called “first partner,” instead of using the title “first lady.”

During his speech, Gavin Newsom reminded his audience of his actions over a decade ago that brought him worldwide attention. “So 15 years ago, when I was a new mayor and I heard politicians in Washington sneering at ‘California values’ and attacking our LGBT community, I remembered what my father taught me: “It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing,” Newsom said. “And that’s what we did. In San Francisco, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, two women who had been in love for nearly 50 years, had the courage to stand up and say those two powerful words: I do. Thousands more followed in their footsteps. It took a long time, but love won.”

Newsom also gave a shout out to his pro-abortion supporters by saying, “California we will always protect a woman’s right to choose.” He has already voiced his approval for a reintroduced abortion bill (SB 24) Governor Jerry Brown vetoed last year that would mandate state university health centers dispense abortion drugs to students.
