California Governor Gavin Newsom announced earlier last week that he will no longer support the death penalty in the Golden State. Governor Newsom stated that he can longer support the death penalty law because in his opinion it is immoral.
Newsom made the following remarks in recent days on the issue:
“The intentional killing of another person is wrong. And as Governor, I will not oversee the execution of any individual.”
“This is about who I am as a human being. . . To me this is the right thing to do.”
“I do not believe that a civilized society can claim to be a leader in the world as long as its government continues to sanction the premeditated and discriminatory execution of its people. In short, the death penalty is inconsistent with our bedrock values and strikes at the very heart of what it means to be a Californian.”
It is strange that Newsom says, “the intentional killing of another person is wrong,” yet approximately a month ago he announced plans to sue the Trump administration over its Title X policies redirecting funds away from Planned Parenthood and other organizations offering abortions.
The move by President Trump means that these funds will now be potentially available to pro life pregnancy care centers that will actually help and support women as they carry their babies to term.
Under the previous rule, Planned Parenthood was receiving in excess of $50 million taxpayer dollars in Title X funds. Title X is a federal grant program administered by the Department of Health and Human Services that includes roughly $286 million, which it distributes to family healthcare centers. Planned Parenthood receives roughly $50-$60 million of this money. The now finalized “Protect Life Rule” filed with the Office of Management and Budget will cut Planned Parenthood and other abortion provider’s access to Title X funding unless it separates abortion from the other services that it claims to provide.
The rule by itself does not necessarily defund Planned Parenthood, but it does strip federal taxpayer dollars away from the abortion giant if they refuse to separate abortion from the other services that they advertise so loudly.
If Governor Newsom follows through with the threatened lawsuit it will make the 47th legal challenge to the Trump administration brought by the state of California.
