Governor Andrew Cuomo is Wrong: Abortion Does not Enhance Women’s Equality

Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York, just signed a bill into law legalizing abortion up until birth on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand for every state within the nation.

However, the legislation is even more far reaching and dangerous than Roe v. Wade. The would allow late term abortions and would even allow people who are not doctors to perform them. Worse yet, the bill attempts to give the appearance of limiting late term abortions, but includes a very broad “health” exception for abortions after 24 weeks. The exception would allow women to have an abortion for up to nine months of pregnancy for “age, economic, social and emotional factors, rather than the biological definition of ‘health’ that normally comes to mind,” according to New York Right to Life.

Governor Cuomo congratulated himself on signing the bill into law by
bragging that New York now has “the most aggressive women’s equality platform in the nation.” Cuomo attempted to play on emotions in his remarks, talking as if Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry are essential to being a woman, and a central pillar of women’s rights.

What Andrew Cuomo stated about abortion simply isn’t true. Having an abortion in no way enhances equality for women. Quite the opposite, abortion takes innocent lives and leaves long term negative effects on  mothers forever. Additionally, many taxpayers are uncomfortable with funding something that they personally believe to be wrong, and that is perfectly understandable. Clearly, abortion is certainly not the empowering tool that Governor Cuomo erroneously makes it out to be, and it’s time government leaders started telling the truth about the negative consequences having an abortion has on women.

The truth is that there is no such thing as a safe abortion. Encouraging women to have abortions without presenting them with the dangers associated with the deadly procedure is unethical and dangerous.

Why would a man like Governor Cuomo sugarcoat the reality of abortion? Why would Governor Cuom go to such great lengths to attack the current administration for taking steps to ensure the safety of women? Governor Cuomo twists the facts to serve his own pro-abortion agenda, and that of the nation’s largest abortion provider Planned Parenthood. Governor Cuomo seems to agree with Planned Parenthood’s agenda of committing enough abortions to make as large a profit off of vulnerable women as possible. Governor Andrew Cuomo is really the one blocking women from women’s equality by prohibiting them from accessing safe healthcare options.

I’ve said it many times, and I will continue to keep saying it. Every life has value because every person endowed by their Creator with life is created in the image of God. Being pro-life means that every life deserves to be respected regardless of circumstances because human life is created with an inherent sanctity and dignity. Being pro-life is more than just pro-birth; it’s pro-woman, pro-adoption, pro-child, pro-family, and pro-equality.
