World Famous Drag Queen Used to Teach Honesty to 2nd Graders in New CA Textbook

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A famous San Francisco Drag Queen with a prostitution record named Jose Julio Sarria is lauded for his honesty in a new second-grade textbook being introduced in school districts throughout California. The new curriculum was created to comply with a 2011 state law requiring that LGBT historical figures be added to K-12 curriculum. Although the California State Board of Education recommended several textbooks that comply with the FAIR Education Act, the final decision on which textbooks to use is in the hands of local school districts.

“California textbooks should provide information, not indoctrination. Many parents have strong objections to equating the moral character of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King to a drag queen with a criminal record,” said California Family Council President Jonathan Keller.

“In addition, many mothers and fathers find it highly inappropriate to introduce six and seven-year-old children to transgenderism, cross dressing, sexual orientation, and other controversial sexualized topics. The law does not require this and educators should not accept it.”

The second-grade history-social science book, My World published by Pearson, is one of several recommended options being piloted and reviewed by public elementary schools around California. The Pearson curriculum promotes universally loved American historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. for their strong moral character right along side other controversial LGBT “heroes” like Governor Candidate Gavin Newsom, and Sarria.

Sarria is lauded as a “Champion of Gay Rights” in part for his openness and honesty about his gay identity and his fondness for dressing in drag when he ran for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors over 50 years ago.

“[Sarria] ran for public office in 1961. He decided to be honest,” the second grade textbook reads. “He told people he was gay and that sometimes he dressed as a woman. He was the first person to do this when running for office.”

Later in the lesson students are asked to write down how Sarria’s honesty inspired others. But the text fails to mention that Sarria, also known as Empress Jose I, was a world famous San Francisco drag queen with a checkered past. For instance, in a book written about his life, The Empress is a Man, there is a whole chapter dedicated to Sarria’s arrest and conviction for solicitation after he was caught during a sting operation at the St. Francis Hotel. The criminal record forced him to give up his plans to be a teacher.

The second-grade lesson pictured below is being piloted right now in the Elk Grove Unified School District. Parents are encouraged to come view the new curriculum on October 11, and asked to give the school district their input. Parents will have additional opportunities to view the curriculum over the next several months before the Elk Grove Unified School Board gives their final approval in the early part of next year. Contact the Elk Grove board members and let them know what you think of this new textbook.

According the the California Department of Education website, instruction in history–social science has to include the contributions of those identifying as LGBT in order to comply with the FAIR Education Act, “but again it falls to the teacher and the local school and district administration to determine how the content is covered and at which grade level(s).”

Although these lessons talk about sexuality and gender identity, they are not considered sex education by the state, because they don’t talk about human reproductive organs. Therefore, school districts are not mandated to let parents opt-out their children from these lessons. Yet, school districts can create an opt-out policy for lessons that involve sexual orientation or gender identity if they choose.

  2. Schools should be teaching, Not Indoctrination of sex or LGBT AGENDA. HOW DO YOU GAIN ACCEPTANCE IS TO START IN GRADE SCHOOL THEN AS THEY GO THROUGH YEARS THESE ARE ACCEPTED AS “NORMAL”. SO I SAY THERE MAY BE PEOPLE IN SCOOLS YO GIVE THIS AGENDA A FOUNDATION TO BUILD ON. THIS SHOULD NOT BE IN OUR SCHOOLS! THIS IS ADULT CHOICES. THANKS

  3. JUST HOW FAR ARE THESE SO CALLED EDUCATORS GOING TO GO. I DISLIKE THIS LATEST LUNACY TO ITS VERY CORE! PEOPLE IFYO CAN PROVIDE PRIVATE SCHOOL IF YOU FEEL LEAD TO DO SO AND WE NEED TO FIND A WAY NOT TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

  4. Public schools have run amuck! This is terrible to teach this to kids in grade school. You can be sure the teacher will give the students all positive enforcement of finding what your gender really is. The wonder our youth are confused. I would send my kids to private school and I will not support public schools.

  5. What do you expect from this extreme left-wing state? Their agenda remains to destroy any fiber of moral decency that may remain in our society,. They are clearly focused on the breakdown of our families, churches, and our traditional Judeo-Christian values in America.

If parents want their children to have a real education (rather than twelve years of tax-payer funded indoctrination, they are going to have to turn to home or private education.

The State of California is far beyond simple liberal politics – they are actively participating in the nearly inevitable fall of America.

I hate to sound “gloom and doom”, but the only chance we have now is a revival among God’s people and for them to desperately cry out to Him to “forgive our sin and heal our land”. 2 Chron 7:14

    • Local school districts have the final say on curriculum. The FAIR Education Act gives school districts the flexibility on how to introduce the historical contributions of LGBT identifying people. What is said and to what ages is in the hands of local school district. So parents need to tell their district representatives to represent their values in the school curriculum. In short parents, pastors and other religious leaders need to speak up. Beyond that we need to elect better representation at the state level. Christians need to vote their values and expect their elected officials to defend those values.

  7. How are you going to complain about Sarria’s “checkered past” when old timey American heroes were just as checkered or worse!

No one complains about Thomas Jefferson being taught in schools but he owned and raped enslaved people. George Washington owned human beings, but a consenting adult getting paid for sex with another consenting adult is too much (none of which is going to be discussed in 2nd grade)? Or is it the clothes he wears that are so offensive?

Also, you guys don’t know a thing about schools. Private school teachers and administration are not held to the same standards as public schools. Private school teachers are not required to have the education and training I have as a public school teacher. So, no, private schools are not better.

  9. The U.S. should consider doing what Russia does. They are allowed to live their lifestyles but homosexuality propaganda to the children is against the law.
Aside from that how I pray that soon public schools will one day operate to private schools standards, including morning prayer to the Creator and the 10 Commandments proudly displayed in each classroom. Hope it happens sooner than later. God bless.

  10. I spent 11 years in a elementary school as a PE Instructor, plus 3 years with Anaheim Achieves an after school program. Though I didn’t have a class room, I had the whole school.
As I now read about this crap being introduced to our little ones, future leaders of America, I am fit to be tied. You don’t have to be Christian you don’t have to be Republican all you have to be is a loving parent WITH common sense and decency. But if you dig deeper into this Far left and gay rights crap you may see it is the people who was elected into decision making positions . Now you know what we must do!!!!

  12. This type of “curriculum” will only foster more confusion and polarity into our children’s culture.
To promote as an example of “honesty” someone who is advertising their life of role modelling living a lie as “honest” is really so obviously contrary to what honesty is meant to be.
For a man to dress as a woman is a deception in itself.
To teach our children that being honest about promoting a deception is “admirable” is blatantly hypocritical.
This sort of agenda has no place in public schools.
If we aren’t allowed to teach authentic morality, we should leave political agenda out of elementary school and just focus on at least teaching our children to reading, writing and arithmetics.
