California Family Council Calls on Senator Ricardo Lara to Apologize for Claiming Biblical Views “Perpetuated” Murder and Torture of Children

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In a despicable attack last Thursday, August 16, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) slandered therapists, pastors, and Bible-believing Christians on the floor of the California Senate. Lara’s defamatory statement came while speaking in support of AB 2943, a bill to label as consumer fraud the sale of goods and services to adults wanting help to change unwanted same sex attractions and gender dysphoria.

The disgusting slur from Lara claimed that beliefs about “conversion” lead to torture, and even “perpetuated the brutal murder” of two children in Los Angeles at the hand of their parents. Sen. Lara is referring to these horrendous crimes in Southern California:

“It is wholly unacceptable for an elected official like Senator Lara to attack therapists, pastors and Bible-believing Christians for simply disagreeing with his views on sexuality.”

“To claim the religious views held by millions of Californians perpetuated the torture and murder of innocent children is a ghastly lie that should not be tolerated from any person claiming to represent California voters.”

California Family Council President Jonathan Keller

Watch a video Senator Lara’s comments, which were as follows:

“The issue with conversion, it already implies that there is something wrong with you, that you are somehow not normal. And it is those feelings that perpetuated the brutal murder of Gabriel Fernandez and Anthony Avalos by the hands of their own parents. Children that were tortured. Children that were made to eat feces, that were burned with cigarettes because somehow they were not normal.”

“We asking everyone to call Senator Ricardo Lara’s office and ask him to apologize for slandering the sincerely held beliefs of Christians throughout this state, this country, and the world!” said Keller. Lara’s office number Capitol Office number is (916) 651-4033.

  1. Christians don’t support the abuse, torture and of murdering children because they think they are gay. This couple are deranged and cruel at their core. That is not what Christ teaches. If the Senator is saying the Christian community is encouraging this type of behavior, he is wrong. He does owe us all an apology. There are Democrats who are pedophiles. Does that mean all Democrats are pedophiles? I certainly hope not. I certainly would not even suggest such a thing. I’m even willing to believe the majority of other Democrats would turn in a pedophile regardless of their political declaration or stature in the party or community.

  2. Re: Senator Ricardo Lara’s comments..

The actions of a few never justifies an implied generality on whole groups. Otherwise, we would have to discredit aLL school teachers as pedophiles, aLL Olympic doctors as sexual predators, aLL Hollywood celebrities as drug addicts, etc etc… (which would be ludicrous)…

It is BeCAUSE there are individuals out there very much concerned about their loved ones, or themselves, with regards to their unwanted sexual oriented feelings (which well might be due to current social influences and pressures, the increasing availability of and prevalent often unsolicited forced exposure to pornography on tv and online, the recent disregard of the majorities wanting to uphold heterosexual rights in public restrooms, etc etc)… It is precisely for these reasons that we need to not hinder or withhold the opportunity for professional resources to be available for those who prefer to be heterosexual.

I am not only offended by Senator Lara’s remarks, but also troubled by the inappropriate application of such an intellectually unworthy argument that misleads and misguides for the sake of a political agenda that does not minimize a discrimination, but actually is creating one.

    Sincerely,
    RLM

  3. The torture of children is not Biblical and I work with special needs adults who have behavior issues. There is nothing wrong with correcting behavior! God makes people the way they are – male or female.

  4. If “change” is not possible, even if somebody wants to change, then why in the world would anyone try to help anybody? Why are we trying to rehabilitate criminals if they are incapable of change? This senator is basically saying that we have absolutely zero control of changing any part of our human tendencies that we desire to change. What about anger, overeating, drug and alcohol abuse, etc., etc. this is a ludicrous and dangerous position to take. If somebody wants help, they should be able to get it.

I wonder if giving a book or Bible to someone seeking gender advice, or giving free counseling would be included in this law? From what I understand it sounds like the concern is if money is exchanged.

    • The law is only triggered if there is a fee involved (conference fee, resources fee, tuition, youth camp fee, counseling fee)

Perhaps one way to combat this law is to offer free help to those wanting to change their behavior or thinking. Perhaps a charity fund to which we could contribute.

  6. I think rather than asking him to apologize, we should extend forgiveness to him and explain to him why he is mistaken in his blame of these tragedies on Christianity—the blame lies rather with sinful man, which is why we so desperately need Christ.

  7. Unfortunately Mr. Lara does not understand the Biblical truth that there is not only something very wrong with him but that’s there’s something very wrong with all of us. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. There is no one righteous no not one. No amount of so called legislation is going to make anyone’s sin acceptable in the eyes of a righteous God.

  9. How did that guy get to be a senator? He’s nuts! How in the world can he link such sickos (child murderers and torturers) with therapists and Christians? He isn’t lucid or of a sound mind. It’s scary that anyone agrees with him. Obviously, he’s doing a lot of damage constructing bills to simply confirm his ignorance.

  10. This is outrageous. They made irresponsible statements like that without any shame. We need to stand up and call it what it is. God is holy and just. May He have mercy and wake us up from this terrible nightmare.

  11. I don’t know if we should expect a person who is not saved to act like one and demand his apology? I honestly think we need a massive move to organize a state wide prayer day in every California church to take a stand for the sate together. Maybe on a regular basis before the election? We can regain the reigns of California for Christ, nothing is impossible with God. Maybe the prayer day could be called “California for Christ”???

    • God expects leaders, even non-Christian ones, to use the authority He has given them to act justly and not to slander innocent people. So I think we have the right to demand just behavior from our elected officials as well, even if they are not Christians. John the Baptist called out Herod publicly for his sin and Jesus called John the greatest man ever born.

  13. I have a question: Has anyone even considered the fact that hormone disrupters (BPA, rBST, pesticides, hormones from Birth Control in the sewer, etc) affect young people going through puberty , makes more than females ? Why is no one addressing this elephant in the room ? Are legislators being lobbied to protect big pharma, big pesticide (Monsanto) , chemical mfg, plastics, etc? There are wonderful ,loving people who have gender confusion and have no idea why and the far left wants to outlaw anyone and anything that even hints at the fact this confusion could be an aberration or a medical problem to be addressed. I feel these people are being further victimized by this ridiculous piece of legislation. It’s shameful in my opinion.

  14. I watched this video with an open mind to see if he said any of the offensive things this article said he did. I am still scratching my head as to why anyone would have a problem with what he said. He never mentioned Christians in this video clip. He did mention conversion therapy. God made his children gay for a reason. Who is anyone to say what he has created is defective in any way? God is about love and acceptance. I am really shocked that a family organization would have a problem with what he said.

There is a big difference between changing behavior that is hurtful to others or oneself and forcing someone to change something that is not hurting anyone and is completely out of their control.. This is like asking someone to change the day they were born. Would you ask a child born with Down syndrome to convert to being a “normal” kid? I am not saying being gay is a defect in any way. I am just trying to make a point. Being gay is not a sin. My goodness. Itsn’t there more important things to work on than this? Let the gay people be. They mean no harm.

  16. Well looks like I’m voting for Ricardo Lara. You are born the way God made you. If God made you gay than there’s nothing wrong with that and he still loves you the same way he loves all his human creations. There is no such thing as gay conversion as these people were born the way they are. No one decides to be gay or is raised to be gay. You either are or you aren’t. And I don’t agree that conversion is torture it’s just immoral and naive to think you can change someone’s sexual preference when deep down inside they will never be happy again.. Let these people be happy and learn to love them. Christians should love everyone like I as a Christian love all my neighbors no matter the color of their skin or their sexual preference.
