Nikki Haley Resigns as United States Ambassador to the United Nations

Yesterday, Nikki Haley announced her resignation from her position as the United States’ Ambassador to the United Nations. Nikki Haley is the former Republican governor of South Carolina.

In a public appearance with President Trump, Nikki Haley stated her intention to resign, saying it has “been the honor of a lifetime.” Her resignation caught many by surprise and also triggered a lot of speculation as to her future plans for public office. Some have even speculated that she will make a run against her former boss, President Trump, although she has denied those claims. Haley did not give a reason for leaving, but stated she is a firm believer in term limits and knowing when it is time for a person to step aside.

Haley reportedly informed Donald Trump that she wanted to take a break towards the end of the year about six months ago. Haley has said she will finish out the remainder of 2018 in her capacity as United States’ Ambassador to the UN.

“Now the U.S. is respected. Countries may not like what we do, but they respect what we do,” Haley stated.  “The U.S. is strong again, it’s strong in a way that should make all Americans very proud,” Haley told reporters.

“I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020,” Haley stated. Haley also stated that she would look forward to supporting Trump’s re-election as President, and supporting the policies that will continue to move the United States in the right direction.

Several of Haley’s colleagues praised the outgoing ambassador.

Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon thanked Haley in a statement “for standing with the truth without fear.”

“Thank you for representing the values common to Israel and the United States. Thank you for your support for the State of Israel, which helped lead to a change in Israel’s status in the UN,” he said in a statement. “Thank you for your close friendship and common paths. Wherever you are, you will continue to be a true friend of the State of Israel.”

President Trump called her a “fantastic person,” saying “she gets it.” Trump said she has done a “fantastic job” and “we have done a fantastic job together.” Trump also said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thinks the world of her.
